Over the last couple of years, I have become keenly interested in basic lifestyle intervention as an active medical therapy.  Medical bariatrics (medical weight loss), motivational interviewing and exercise physiology have been the main tools to work with such diagnoses as obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, depression, metabolic syndrome, arthritis and fibromyalgia.  Besides reduction of disease burden, I find that my patients are reporting increased energy, satisfaction with medical management and, not surprising, increased satisfaction with their personal life.

I have spent the last year of my residency in fine tuning my approach to the primary care patient.  I focus on acute and chronic problems withn the family practice standard of care format, but attempt to have patients invest in their health through active goal setting with biomarkers as indicators of health.  When possible, I use alternative medicine when they have a better risk/benefit ratio to conventional therapy.  An example would be to substitute acupuncture, hydrotherapy or exercise regime for chronic use off narcotics.  I have found these to have better outcomes with quicker resolution of pain.
