| Male Hormone Replacement | |

When a man's male hormones start to decline, he will typically have symptoms such as abdominal weight gain, decreased motivation and mood, decreased muscle strength and stamina, decreased interest in sex and sexual function. These changes can occur even when a man's testosterone levels are still in the reportedly "normal" range posted in many lab reports. The levels are reported as normal, because it is considered "normal" to get older and weaker. Well, this does not have to be the case. Replacing a man's testosterone (and DHEA if appropriate) to a younger and healthier level can reverse all of those symptoms mentioned above. It can also prevent common age-associated diseases such as prostate cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia. We have noted at our clinic that some men who have had vasectomies have accelerated decline in their testosterone, even requiring replacement as soon as two years after their procedure. Having hernia surgery in the groin is another risk factor for this. If you or a man you know have any of the above symptoms, their male hormone levels should be assessed appropriately. An "optimal" total testosterone level is about 700 for the average-sized man, and an "optimal" DHEA-S level is about 400. Treating men appropriately in this situation can dramatically improve their quality of life, and extend their life expectancy significantly. Unfortunately, most men in this situation tend to sit at home and feel depressed and unmotivated rather than going to the doctor for help. Most of the men we see are sent or brought by a woman who cares about them. |
